SalinePreservation Association The formation of
SPA was prompted by the Cherokee Women's The Pocahontas Club is a 105 year old organization founded in June 29, 1899. The membership roster is a Who's Who of the Cherokee Nation; Will Rogers was once a member. Their members realize that the Saline Courthouse is a Cherokee treasure that must be preserved. Lisa Melchior, a Cherokee Women's Pocahontas member from Pryor, spearheaded the formation of SPA and serves as President. The executive committee is composed of the following: Marus Juby, Vice-President; Jean Breed, Secretary/Treasurer; Preservation Committee; David Breed-Chair; and Historian; Shirley Covey. At the 2003 Cherokee Holiday, SPA launched their S.O.S campaign to save the Saline Courthouse. They found that many Cherokees did not know about the Saline Courthouse and even some tribal councilors had never been there. Vocal support from elected Cherokee officials soon followed but SPA was advised that no funds were available to hire an architect, the first step toward restoration. SPA incorporated as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) entity and received I.R.S. exempt status. Richard Brenner, Architect, graciously offered his services to SPA. Regular membership meetings and coordination with Cherokee Nation officials ensued. Funds are needed for this vision to become a reality. You are invited to become a member of SPA and to assist with the actual restoration project and please , donate today! |
